Friction from a vehicle engine's operation results to extremely high temperatures. To avoid the overheating of engines, automakers install cooling systems in automobiles. As larger and more powerful engines are getting manufactured, however, the cooling system technology needed to adapt to the demands of these new engines. In turn, car-manufacturing companies like Volvo created new cooling components. A clear example of such is the expansion tank.
An expansion tank is a container that provides extra storage space for the expansion of a coolant--a fluid used to dissipate heat. A Volvo Expansion Tank Hose ensures the optimum flow of coolant as it connects the vehicle's radiator with an expansion tank. An expansion tank is sometimes called coolant reservoir or overflow canister.
When engines heat up, the coolant consequently expands. Without the expansion tank, however, the coolant will just flow out of the cooling system and get displaced to the ground. Volvo Expansion Tank Hoses are crucial in engine cooling systems. Without these components, coolant is not delivered to overflow canisters and cooling systems become very ineffective.
Aside from containing the coolant that has expanded with heat, the expansion tank also makes the cooling system more efficient by eliminating the air bubbles from the coolant. Coolant without air bubbles absorbs heat much faster. When the engine is sufficiently cooled, a vacuum in the cooling system sucks back the coolant through the Volvo Expansion Tank Hose. A properly functioning cooling system does not lose any coolant as the tank hose completes it as a virtually closed system. Even if the level of coolant in the expansion tank rises and falls, the radiator remains full all the time.

"Cars are driven by people. Therefore the guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo is -- and must remain -- safety." This was the statement of then Volvo managing director Assar Gabrielsson and Volvo technical manager Gustav Larson in 1927. Since then, the Swedish automaker has focused on making safe vehicles by installing safety features like the suspension system. Aside from ensuring a comfortable ride, the suspension system also helps the car's handling and braking. Thus the various components that make it up must be in top shape to maintain an efficient suspension. One important element is the Volvo sway bar link. Linking opposite wheels together through short lever arms connected by a torsion spring, it adds the roll stiffness of the suspension. It also links a torsion bar to all the sides of an axle enabling sway bars to perform the function of shifting movement from one side of the suspension to the other. This also makes the suspension stiff.
The presence of the Volvo sway bar link allows the sway bar to achieve its full functionality. This can be very helpful if a vehicle experiences understeering and oversteering. In understeering, one can easily increase rear sway bar diameter or decrease front sway bar diameter for balance restoration. On the other hand, correcting oversteering with sway bars requires one to install either a smaller rear bar or a larger front bar. The Volvo sway bar link can be adjusted to effectively add or lessen the sway bar's stiffness without buying a new one.
In the process of understanding how Volvo sway bar links work, one must not forget that sway bars should conform to the vehicle's springs. Installing stiff springs does not require large diameter sway bars. Combined stiff springs and small sway bars are good enough for body roll control. Installing soft springs needs large diameter sway bars. This provides a relatively smooth ride with stiff suspension and decreased body roll.

In keeping with its long-standing tradition of emphasizing safety features, Volvo now offers an optional system to monitor the area to the side and rear of a car popularly known as the "blind spot." Volvo was the first company to introduce wide-angle mirrors on car doors in 1979 and now the company is utilizing cameras to enhance driver awareness in moving traffic. (The system will not alert the driver to parked cars or other types of static objects.)
The Volvo Blind Spot Information system is a $595 option comprised of three parts. The most noticeable, the indicator, appears at the bottom corner of the front windows above the sound system's tweeter. The translucent square shows orange when another vehicle is in the blind spot. The system's second, and most vital component, is the camera mounted adjacent to the side mirror which actually performs the monitoring. (Note that there is a camera located under each side mirror.) Finally, there's a switch on the center stack to turn the system on and off that is labeled "BLIS."
The system will recognize both regular sized vehicles (cars and trucks) and motorcycles in both daylight and night-time driving conditions. The technology will respond to any car moving at a speed of more than 6 mph and those that are driving as much as 12 mph slower and 43 mph faster than the car on which the system itself is mounted. It should be noted, however, that in conditions where the visibility is poor, like fog or heavy snow, the BLIS will not work and will inform the driver of that fact.
No doubt in an effort to avoid potential litigation, Volvo says the BLIS system is designed to provide the driver with "information," not to act as a clearance or warning signal. Reviewers who have driven Volvos outfitted with the BLIS suggest that new car owners should "learn" the system by using the mirrors to observe exactly where a car approaching from the rear is located when the indicator light activates. All agree that the BLIS allows for a "generous" amount of space for lane changes. The technology is meant to compliment the driver's own judgment of the current traffic pattern, not to take the place of the appropriate use of the mirrors or to override decisions based on years of driving experience.

How often do you hear of a deadly Volvo car accident? Not very often. They are well known for the safety and have been since day one. It is one of the few manufacturers that actually design their vehicles as sexy and safe. You hardly get the two in such an ideal package. Many people are buying Volvos because of this fact. With the overwhelming amount of fatal car crashes that occur everyday, it's no wonder why consumers are now looking for a safe place to be while driving on the road. Manufacturers of other car makes are noticing this sudden increase in this safety trend and are beginning to design their vehicles more reliably.
Ford for instance, acquired Volvo car corp. in 1999 and have since then been using their connection with Volvo to raise its safety profile in the auto industry. The auto safety field is very competitive because of the increase in consumer awareness and consumers starting families earlier. When you have children and a spouse your taste in cars change drastically. You no longer want that two-seater or that car with the Lamborghini doors. You want a vehicle that can comfortably fit everyone and that will keep them safe.
If you have ever gone to a car show to see concept cars, then you have noticed that Volvo always has a really great vehicle with safety always in mind. It even adjusts during turns, widening as you go. This great technology is possible through the use of fiber-optic methods.
The best so far is the night vision. Most people don't see well at night and require glasses. It has been proven that red lights are easier to see in a dim environment. Utilizing that fact, Volvo makes another good grade in the safety department. Combined with the adaptive headlights, older drivers tend to feel more comfortable driving at night. Not only is this good for safety but it also moves the buyer metrics higher since people feel more comfortable driving and tend to buy at least one more new car in their lifetime. With Volvo's infrared night vision, no one would have to worry about those winding dark roads.
Volvo safety has been a concept for its manufacturer since the beginning and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Where as some manufacturers rely on gimmicks to sell cars, Volvo has built the reputation as the safest car around. So if you are looking to get a truly safe car with a wonderful track record, Volvo just may be for you.

The Swedish-based subsidiary of Ford and producer of high quality Volvo floor mats, Volvo is not open in discussing its plan of producing locally the S80 car model in China. And this is probably because according to Dr. Alexander Klose, the new Chief Executive Officer for Volvo Car China, the company is not in a hurry to produce another new vehicle in China especially when cost and quality are not that well controlled. This was also confirmed by top executives of Volvo Car China stating that it may take at least two years if cost and quality will not improve.
At present the automaker owns five car models in mainland China with prices ranging from CNY 300,000 to CNY 1 million. There are two import models being distributed in China the S80 and XC90. The current important task of the company is to increase sales of Volvo S4 cars and to broaden its shares in the second-largest auto market in the world.
Volvo has started the production of luxury car models such as the Volvo S40 in China in July of 2006 and the company is hoping for this model to bring in annual sales of 10,000 units. Unfortunately, things were not turning out according to the projection of the automaker, instead of the 10,000 units sold Volvo Car China was only able to obtain 500 units sold per month totaling to 6,000 units in a year.
Although Volvo’s sales in China didn’t turn out as expected but according to Chinese dealers of Volvo Car the sales of the Volvo S40 had been good. The sales obtained by the Swedish automaker are lower than that of its archrival in the luxury segment, BMW.
China-made BMW branded car models were able to obtain a round 6,674 units in the first six months of 2007 posting a leap of 40 percent as compared to the same period last year.
And even though Volvo Car China is a brand controlled by Ford Motor Company it just cannot partake in the production management in Chang’an Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd., which is a joint venture entered into by Ford, Mazda, and Chang’an Automobile Group.
In addition, despite the fact that Volvo Car produces its Volvo S40 at Chang’an Ford Mazda, it does not inject capital in the venture and is given a small participation in the venture’s management. Volvo is part of Ford’s PAG or Premier Automotive Group and all of the Swedish automaker’s luxury car model operations including the implementation of any strategic development in the Chinese market are controlled by PAG.
The Chang’an Ford Automobile Co., Ltd. was founded in April 25, 2001 with an investment of USD 98 million by Ford Motor and Chang’an Automobile Group. It was later on renamed to Chang’an Ford Mazda after the Japanese subsidiary of Ford has invested in it last March 2006.

As every Indians dream of, the chassis, body and the interiors are brand new from stem to stern for the new 2007 model. The safety package for the new S80 is simply superb with the ABS, traction control, and the yaw control.
The Personal Car Communicator, a new electronic key fob design that can lock or unlock the car from distances up to 110 yards, and can tell you what state the locks are in. It can activate the alarm, and sense the presence of a human heartbeat inside the car. A traffic distance warning system on top of the dash triggers a flashing red light and an audible warning, both of which can be defeated by the driver if desired, amazing? well, with the perfect blend of all these features the new luxury sedan is well admired and the fact is that, it needs to be appreciated the most.
After the success stories in both Russia and China, Volvo is starting up its operation with much more expectations in India, a country with huge potential. 'There is a lot of NRI population here and the people here have an affinity for luxury cars. So this place has huge potential and that's one of the reasons we are here', says Volvo Car India MD Paul de Voijs.

Have you ever had your car stolen? It is a gutting experience, especially when it's your fault! Now, I can imagine you asking, how can a stolen car ever be the owners fault? In answer to that question, I shall tell you a little story.
I am a terribly forgetful person! I am forever leaving my keys in shops, the car, lying around the house. On this one particular occasion, I made the somewhat catastrophic mistake of leaving the keys in my front door when I entered my house from work. I had opened the door, carried my bags inside and slammed the door behind me, completely forgetting that I had left the keys in the lock.
The next day, I was hurrying around getting ready for work, and I did my morning checks, handbag -check, coat - check, keys - not check! I then proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes frantically searching around my house, hunting for the long-lost keys. I decided to grab the spare key, to my house and my car and ran outside, already late for work.
When I got outside, imagine my horror when I couldn't find my car! Now, I know I'm a forgetful person, but surely even I couldn't lose my car.
I paced my street for about ten minutes and I finally came to the conclusion that my car had been stolen. I rang in work and then proceeded to call the police and all of a sudden it dawned on me! I had left my keys in the front door. Not only my house keys, but my car keys too.
Now I can hear you asking how the thief knew that those keys were to my car. I had a Volvo key chain! I bought the key chain when I bought my car because I was so proud of my first brand new car, I wanted to show it off. I used to feel a great sense of achievement when people spotted my keys and my Volvo key chain and asked if I had that car.
Little did I know, that by having Volvo key chains attached to my keys, I would openly invite a lucky passer by to steal my car. It was so humiliating explaining the whole scenario to the Police. Explaining that not only had I left my keys in my front door over night, but I had quite openly advertised the fact that my car was the one sitting outside my house. Admittedly, it probably wouldn't have taken the thief long to work out which car was mine, seeing as it was parked outside my house and all, but I still felt an enormous sense of stupidity.
I managed to get my poor Volvo back after a few weeks, minus my Volvo keychain, but I was glad. I now know that it is incredibly silly to have the brand of your car on the keys. It only takes an opportunist to wander by and your car will be gone, quicker than you can blink.
So, a little piece of advice to you - don't put Volvo key chains on your keys when it sat outside your house and you decide to leave your keys in the front door!

Ford part of the once renowned Detroit's Big Three and producer of top-of-the-line Lincoln catalytic converter has released a statement refuting reports circulating in both UK and US that the automaker will dispose of its profitable Swedish unit, Volvo.Sunday Times has reported yesterday that Ford has decided two weeks ago to sell Volvo for as much as US$8 billion. The Sunday Telegraph has also reported that Ford was willing to listen to offers from potential buyers of the automaker and would make a final decision on whether to proceed after completing the sale of its Land Rover and Jaguar businesses.Ford said last month that it was conferring with investment bankers about options for Jaguar and Land Rover. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker is trying to restore a profit after recording a US$12.6 billion loss last year. The Sunday Times has reported last July 8 that Ford has set a deadline for bids to buy Jaguar and Land Rover.Ford spokesman John Gardiner has declined to comment on reports in UK newspapers and refrain from saying whether there was a deadline for expressions of interest in Jaguar and Land Rover.It can be remembered that Ford bought Volvo Cars from Volvo AV in 1999 for US$6.45 billion to become a part of the Premier Automotive Group of luxury-brand cars together with Jaguar, Land River, and Aston Martin. Ford sold its Aston Martin last March to a group of investors led by the UK auto-racing champion David Richards for US$848 million. Despite the fact that we are still in the early parts of 2006, there had already been many auto shows not only in the United States but in other countries as well that featured the most captivating and the most promising production vehicles. During the Geneva Auto Show, the company's entry was the 2007 Volvo S80 which is already a production vehicle. The 2007 Volvo S80 is a luxury vehicle and it basically competes with the likes of the Audi A6, the Acura RL, the BMW 5 series, and the Lexus ES 350. Almost all the cars that had its debut in the Frankfurt Auto show goes with its focus of Green car technology: low-emission diesels, fresh hybrids, and hydrogen fuel cells. The Volvo Recharge concept vehicle is one clear icon. The Recharge is built with a battery that can be recharged in a common electrical outlet to promote maximum environmental benefit. Only that, this battery can only run a maximum of 100 meters and then shifted to the four-cylinder Flexiful engine. "A certain proportion of electrical vehicles will be necessary to meet the CO2 emission demands of the future. Since the Volvo ReCharge Concept combines an excellent battery range with a backup combustion engine, it is a very interesting concept," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Cars.The Recharge is product of a combination of a number of the latest technological innovations called "series hybrid" making no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels. The battery pack is a lithium-polymer battery. When the battery runs dry, the four-cylinder 1.6 liter engine powers up.The hybrid system is also backed up by an efficient generator, the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). It comes in when the battery runs short of power for the drive.The driver controls the four-cylinder Flexifuel engine manually by means of a button in the instrument panel. It allows the driver to start the engine earlier to prolong the life of the battery. The internal combustion engine starts if 70 percent of the battery power had already been used up."There is a considerable difference between our plug-in hybrid and today's hybrids. Today's hybrids use the battery only for short periods to assist the combustion engine. Our solution is designed for most people to run on electric power all the time, while providing the extra security that comes with having a combustion engine as a secondary source of electrical power," says Ichiro Sugioka, project manager for the Volvo ReCharge Concept.Also according to Sugioka, the Volvo ReCharge concept has its lively and sporty driving properties, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9 seconds and can reach the top speed of 160 km/h. Inside, the cabin is equipped with interior auto parts (like auto floor mats) meant to give the passengers a comfortable ride."This is a ground-breaking innovation for sustainable transportation. A person driving less than 100 kilometres a day will rarely need to visit a filling station. In the USA, this may apply to almost 80 percent of drivers," says Magnus Jonsson.The battery can be fully charged within three hours, but a one hour quick charge can already reach 50 km according to Jonsson. "This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity in intended markets comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power," Jonsson added.

The engineers at Volvo are no strangers to cutting edge safety systems. In 2006 the Volvo S80 could be outfitted with Collision Warning and Brake Support alerts. The systems sent visible and audible cues to the driver when the gap between his car and the one ahead tightened up too rapidly. In addition to the warnings, the brakes were prepped for use, but the driver's foot still had to do the work. Now, the Volvo XC60 crossover, set to go on sale in Europe this summer and coming to the United States in 2009, will be outfitted with City Safety, technology that will not only monitor the gap between cars and prep the brakes, but if necessary, do the braking itself.Using an optical radar system built in to the windshield at the same level as the rear view mirror, City Safety monitors ahead of the car to a distance of approximately 20 feet (six meters). Intended for low-speed, bumper-to-bumper driving at rates of under 20 mph, the radar will pre-charge the brakes when the gap begins to get tight so the driver can respond more effectively. If, however, a collision is imminent, City Safety uses a hydraulic pump to activate the brakes on its own.The unit's algorithm runs fifty calculations per second, constantly determining the necessary braking speed to prevent a collision, factoring in both the car's speed and the distance to the car ahead of its position in the lane. When the calculated force needed to brake exceeds a pre-determined level and the driver has not physically responded by tapping the brakes, City Safety concludes that a collision is imminent and intervenes. The system will work during the day and at night, but can be limited by weather conditions including fog, mist, heavy rain, or snow. Sensors in the windshield will alert the driver if dirt has built-up to a level that will compromise the unit's ability to scan the road ahead.Statistics compiled by Volvo indicate that more than 75% of reported collisions actually occur when the vehicles involves are moving at speeds of less than 20 mph. The company's engineers optimistically predict that the City Safety system has the potential to reduce such low-speed collisions by as much as 50%. Although the units will be standard on the XC60 crossover, Volvo has not announced a decision on inclusion with other models or if City Safety will be offered as a standard feature or an available option when it does proliferate to those models.The XC60, which will be built at the company's assembly facility in Ghent, Belgium, is being described by Volvo as the safest car it has ever built. The City Safety system joins a growing body of collision detection and prevention units being incorporated into 21st century vehicles, most geared toward blind spot monitoring and enhancing the driver's view and perception of the space around the car. Volvo's approach should prove particularly useful in crowded urban settings where commuters are subject to both tight driving conditions and the potential for road rage in other drivers.
